Our Spenbeck Story

1981

1981

Spenbeck was founded by Mich & Don Stevenson – two brothers with a shared interest in property development. Named after two of their children – Spencer and Becky.

1992

Don Stevenson is sadly lost, with Mich carrying on the business with a determination to make a difference in memory of his brother.

The Later 90’s

The Lace Market Heritage Trust (LMHT) is founded by Mich, with the purpose of working to preserve & renovate the historic buildings housed within this famous area of Nottingham city centre. Mich also creates The Museum of Law Trust Co. (MLTC), with the aim of saving The Shire Hall & creating Nottingham’s Galleries of Justice – now the National Justice Museum. Mich is awarded an OBE for ‘Services to the Galleries of Justice’ & an Honorary MA by Nottingham Trent University in recognition of his work to regenerate The Lace Market.

The 2000’s

Mich is awarded the Freedom of the City of Nottingham in recognition of his significant contribution to the city and its heritage infrastructure. Victoria officially joins Spenbeck. Becky joins Spenbeck 5 years later. Mich is awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (Hon LLD) by Nottingham Trent University.

The 2010’s

Mich delivers his vision for Nottingham’s Creative Quarter, which brings significant investment into the city. Mich retires, with Becky & Victoria taking over the business and setting out their vision for its future success. Spenbeck’s Birkin Building regeneration project is lauded as an exemplar of conservation-led regeneration by Historic England. Spenbeck wins regional awards in heritage regeneration & leadership and gains its third commendation from Nottingham Civic Society.

The 2020’s

Spenbeck shares its expertise in optimising work environments by delivering consultancy support in sustainability, interior design & building health. Further awards are won in sustainability leadership, delivering social value & sustainable heritage regeneration.

“I want to say how impressed we are at Historic England with the Birkin Building project. I don’t think I’m overstating it in saying that it represents the very best of conservation-led regeneration – an exemplary building repair project twinned with a vibrant new use in one of the most significant conservation areas in the country. This is stewardship in its best sense”.

Clive Fletcher – Regional Director
Historic England

“Blueprint’s approach is ‘People, Place and Planet’. Sincerely delivering against these three principles is an essential ingredient that is found in all the great places in our world. When we realised that Spenbeck was doing this by taking an ethical and values-driven approach we instantly knew that we needed to be part of that’.”
