Frequently Asked Questions

Behaviour Change & Change Management FAQ's

We hadn't even considered climate anxiety as a thing! Is it really a big enough concern to impact performance at work?

Climate anxiety is increasing, as we become overwhelmed with constant warnings of overheating, food shortages and health impacts.  It's no wonder this spills over into work, leading to absenteeism and lower productivity.  We work with you to review your governance procedures to help make sure climate anxiety management is embedded into risk registers, assessments and health & wellbeing policies.

We need change management support but are happy to manage the implementation phase ourselves. Can we do this?

Absolutely! The joy of change management (done well!) is that it happens in stages so it doesn't overwhelm and all makes sense, both for capacity and budgets.  Some clients want us to support with the entire process. Others ask us to conduct the review and then write a detailed recommendation report with timelines then they take it from there.  Ultimately, you are in control of what input you would like from us and if anything changes and you would like us to help you further you only have to ask!

It feels like everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of delivering sustainability training and change management. Why should we use Spenbeck?

We get that, and it's important to know you are getting genuine value for the time and money you are investing. For us, it's about harnessing our 45 year's of multi-award-winning expertise in creating and maintaining sustainable communities into policies and behaviours that make your sustainability efforts successful.  We're able to combine our commercial acumen and extensive experience in decarbonising buildings, all backed by several years of teaching expertise, to deliver meaningful and lasting success for our clients. Don't just take it from us. Check out our Showcase page and testimonials to see what they have to say!

Budgets are tightening and while I'd love us to invest in behaviour change its increasingly becoming a 'nice to have'. How can I justify this cost to my line manager?

It's a very valid question and every decision now has a much higher opportunity cost.  Our response is to think of all our client support as an investment, rather than a cost.  We politely remind those who are reticent that the cost of inaction will be dwarfed by the cost of inaction.  Legislation, social trends and competitors' actions all mean that if you don't embed energy efficiency within your organisation now you are at real risk of playing very costly catch up later.  It is why everything we do is bespoke to meet your exact needs and context, so we can cater for every budget and ensure no one gets left behind.

Consultancy Support FAQ's

We're an micro-SME and want to improve our sustainability. Are we too small for you to support us?

Not at all!  Obviously we're delighted to count household names such as Historic England and the National Trust as Spenbeck clients, but work with solopreneurs to SMEs too.  As a micro-SME ourselves we completely understand how daunting it can be for smaller organisations and charities who may well feel they're getting left behind.  Our passion and expertise in making sustainability, ESG and Net Zero accessible to those who need our support the most is what excites us to get out of bed in the morning!

We wrote a sustainability policy a few years ago. I'm not sure its quite up to date and giving the message we want. Can you review and improve it?

Yes we can!  This is a very straightforward process and popular with clients.  We usually have an online meeting to gather information and then its a case of reviewing any documentation and rescripting it to secure your sustainability, ESG or Net Zero narrative in a way that all your stakeholders can understand.

We know we have to improve our sustainability capabilities at Board and Exec level but aren't sure where to start. Is that something you can help with?

Personalised support is what we do and don't worry, many of our clients came to us in the same boat.  We start by having an exploratory, no-obligation chat about your current context and hoped for outcomes.  Then it's onto co-creating a training package that meets your exact needs in terms of focus areas, locations and budget across the most realistic time frame.

Your mention you use the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I've heard of them but not sure how they will help improve our sustainability?

Everything we do at Spenbeck is founded on the SDGs as they reflect our understanding of what sustainability truly means.  It's about ensuring that an entity can continue in an effective way well into the future, and for us that is sustainable health, education, communities and business, not only the environment.  We take this systemic, holistic approach to ensure that your organisation becomes authentically sustainable, with all the benefits that provides.

Interior Design FAQ's

Do I need a full interior design service or can I simply ask for help with what we need ?

No, you don’t need a full service.  We are very happy to help with anything you need from as little as an hourly basis too!  We have a variety of services available to best suit the requirements of your project, nothing is too big or small.  Once we’ve had an initial chat and we know what you’re looking to achieve then we can sort the most cost-effective package/use of your time to best provide you with support you need

I know we need help but don't know where to start. Is that a problem?

Not at all!  By having a quick chat with you & asking you a couple of questions, we will get a good understanding of what it is you’re trying to achieve & then be able to work with you on a design to allow you to accomplish that.

Do you provide contractors or can I use my own contacts?

We have a trusted team of contractors – electricians, plumbers, joiners, painters – that we have worked with for many years who are on hand to work individually or together on your project.  However, many people have contractors they have used before & may prefer to on their own project which is also completely fine with us.  We usually find it is a mix of the two.  We are all here to achieve your design goals & we are happy to work with the team of your choosing to ensure this is done to your satisfaction!

Building Health FAQ’s

I'll be honest, 'building health' all sounds rather mystical! Does it really work?!

Absolutely!  All it is doing is reconnecting ourselves as humans with how we were designed to operate in the natural world.  Our physiology isn’t designed to be inside for 90& of our lives.  Our body responds positively to cues from our nature such as the green of trees and working to our circadian rhythm.

How does building health support accessibility and inclusion?

Building health takes a person-centric approach, recognising that our minds and bodies respond to its environment in different ways.  Harnessing and supporting these differences is at the core to create tangible improvements in mental and physical health.  We’re talking quiet zones for the introverts or desk lamps for those who work better with directed light and clearer signage and wayfinding in designs accessible for neurodiverse staff.  True inclusion isn’t simply about protected characteristics and neuro-inclusion, but ensuring our physiological needs are met too.  Then you’ve got a comprehensive inclusion policy and improgved business performance.

While I agree with the principles of building health it all sounds rather costly?

Not at all!  One of the key benefits is that the solutions we recommended are mostly free or cost neutral! Our starting point is always how we can tweak what you have in terms of layout and policies and we ensure our quick wins are as cost-effective as possible.  Think of it as an investment in the health, wellbeing and inclusion of your staff that will reap returns in the form of better business performance, staff recruitment and retention and as a point of differentiation.  What’s not to like?!

I'm a little uncertain, whose remit would building health would fall under?

The principles of building health are fundamental to both Human Resources and Facilities Management.  How building are designed and maintained plays a significant role in the mental and physical health of occupants.  At the same time, the majority of organisations haven’t considered building health when spending thousands on writing health and wellbeing policies.  Building health is the final and fundamental part of the jigsaw for both these roles or departments and makes the difference between an underperforming set of policies and a truly impactful one.
